FRUIT FROCKS F O X

ORANGE EXPLORATIONS

2017-2018

FRUIT FROCKS F O X was a project that arose out of my love of citrus, and most notoriously, oranges. I eat an orange a day and much to my dismay orange peels cannot be composted in vermicomposts! (Although the rumours are not true – you can home compost citrus peels!!) In 2018, I was given a brief for the R Sustainable Fashion Show, hosted by the Edinburgh College of Art and organised by fellow students. Ill and consuming satsumas and oranges galore, I decided I needed to do something with the peels piling up around me!

1
These initial experiments were sewn into several citrus peel bikinis and showcased at numerous fashion shows and exhibitions across Edinburgh.

2
My sewing was outpacing my citrus consumption so I reached out to local cafés and formed a collaboration with the renowned Kilimanjaro Café on Nicholson Street, Edinburgh. They made fresh orange juice daily and I would collect all their discarded orange peels to take home, de-pulp, clean, and dry. Once dried, I sewed them into all sorts of garments – skirts, dresses, bikini tops, necklaces, earrings, headbands, and maybe one day shoes!

3
In order to make these garments more durable I conducted a series of experiments testing which substances would make my orange peels both flexible and resistant.
